Panasonic announces entrance into Android arena by announcing new ELUGA device which will go on sale this Spring

Panasonic today (February 21) launched its new flagship ELUGA smartphone at a press conference in Hamburg, Germany running on Android Gingerbread 2.3.5.

The ELUGA (pictured) which is the first device from Panasonic to run on the Android platform weighs 103 grammes, has a 7.8 millimetre profile across the entire length of the handset and is waterproof.

It also comes with a 8 megapixel camera, a 1GHz dual core processor, 4.3 inch screen and is NFC enabled.

Speaking at the launch of the ELUGA Panasonic Panasonic European CEO Laurent Abadie said he expects to sell 1.5 million units of the device in its first year.

“ We are very confident with the product and have set a European target of 1.5 million units, to end March 2013” Abadie said.

Panasonic Systems Europe general manager and head of communications Toshiya Matsumura added: “ “Despite the unprecedented increase in the number of smartphone devices appearing over the last few years, we don’t believe anyone has yet managed to truly bridge the gap between style and substance.

“With the launch of the ELUGA, we’re aiming to prove it is possible to deliver style, function, form, and the very best underlying technology, all in a competitively-priced package.”
