The operator’s £1 billion takeover Cable & Wireless Worldwide is a game changer, but the telecoms provider’s biggest shareholder could block the deal

Vodafone’s agreed £1 billion takeover offer for Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW) will fundamentally change the face of UK telecoms if it goes ahead.

Hurdles remain, more of which later, but Vodafone is now the only bidder in town after India’s Tata Communications was forced to wave ‘ta-ta’ after failing to come up with  an acceptable price.

Tata is rumoured to have offered only 25p per share for CWW, whereas Vodafone has tabled what it described as a final offer of 38p per share.

RIM appoints new COO and CMO

Industry veterans Kristian Tear and Frank Boulben join manufacturer as it prepares for the launch of its BlackBerry 10 platform towards the end of the year

Research In Motion (RIM) has appointed Kristian Tear as chief operating officer and Frank Boulben as chief marketing officer.

RIM said the duo will complement its existing executive team as it continues to focus on expanding its global customer base and prepares for the launch of its new BlackBerry 10 platform later this year.

Tear (pictured left) joins from rival handset manufacturer Sony Mobile Communications where he was executive vice president since 2005. He was previously corporate vice president of Sony Ericsson in western Europe

LG Optimus L7 goes on sale in the UK

Smartphone part of LG’s L-Style portfolio to be rolled out this week, with a white version of the handset now available from Phones 4U

The LG Optimus L7 will begin arriving at stores around the UK this week. A white version of the smartphone has gone on sale at Phone 4U today.

Following its release in Europe this month, the Optimus L7 will go on sale in Asia followed by other global markets soon after.

The LG Optimus L7 was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. It runs off the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, a 4.3-inch touchscreen. rear five megapixel autofocus camera with flash, front-facing VGA camera and internal memory of up 2.7GB that can be expanded by 32GB with a microSD card.

LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company president and CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park said: “The L7 is a significant addition to our L-Series portfolio and we are confident that it will prove highly attractive to users. We expect it to be one of our most popular smartphones.”

Carphone Warehouse giving away a 10-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab and accessories to the first 1,000 customers that pre-order the new smartphone

The Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4U and all the major mobile operators have confirmed they will sell the Samsung Galaxy S III when it goes on sale in the UK. The smartphone will be available from May 30.

The first 1,000 customers to pre-order the device at Carphone Warehouse online or via the retailer’s call centre will receive a free 10-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. In addition they will receive an InvisibleSHIELD protector and in-car micro USB charger, resulting in a combined value of £428.98.

T-Mobile offerings its customers Orange home broadband

Orange product becomes the first to be sold by T-Mobile, with others being sold by the operator in the coming months

T-Mobile is now offering its customers Orange’s home broadband service via its sales channels.

It is the first time an Orange product has been sold by T-Mobile following the creation of Everything Everywhere, something the company says is likely to continue with other product lines over the coming months.

The Orange home broadband packages are available via T-Mobile telesales, and are being rolled out to all T-Mobile stores and the online shop.

The Orange home broadband plans start from £5 a month and include a free Bright Box wireless router worth £95. They come with additional extras including landline minutes, a 12 month subscription to McAfee Antivirus 2012+ Parental Controls worth £49.99 and two-for-one cinema trips with Orange Wednesdays.
